Working Together to Reduce Wildfire Risk in the Brecks
In 2022, Norfolk faced the devastating consequences of extreme heat and wildfires: twenty homes were lost, and precious countryside, wildlife, and much-loved landscapes were severely damaged. Recently, we met with Ray Harcourt, Watch Commander and Wildfire Lead for Norfolk Fire Service, to explore opportunities for collaboration between BFWN and the Fire Service.
A key area of interest was how our farmer members could play a vital role in wildfire response. Ray was particularly enthusiastic about the proposed cultivated margin network, which could act as a natural firebreak between crops and housing during future extreme summers.
We are excited to strengthen our partnership with the Fire Service and are planning an information-sharing session with Ray for interested members. We will release more details once this event is confirmed.
